Safe Medications in Pregnancy
These over-the-counter medications are safe in pregnancy. If you want to know more about each medication, you can look them up on MotherToBaby or ask your provider at an appointment. Talk with provider before trying medications that are not on this list.
Heartburn
- Tums
- Pepcid
- Rolaids
Hemorrhoids
- Tucks pads
- Witch hazel
- Preparation H
- Anusol
Nausea/Vomiting
- Vitamin B6 (25mg 3-4x or 50mg 2x per day)
- Doxylamine (Unisom) ½ tab (12.5mg) at bedtime
Rashes
- Hydrocortisone Cream
- Benadryl Cream
- Aveeno Oatmeal Bath
Yeast Infections
- Miconazole (Monistat 7). 7 day treatment recommended
- Probiotics (ideally containing Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus)
Allergies
- Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Tab)
- Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
- Sinus Rinse (Neti-pot)
- Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
- Loratadine (Claritin)
Cough
- Dextromethorphan (Robitussin & Robitussin DM)
- Cough Drops
Colds(Mucous/ Expectorant)
- Guaifenesin (Mucinex) (avoid in the first trimester)
Colds (Decongestant)
- Saline spray
- Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) (avoid in the first trimester)
- Vicks VapoRub
Sleep
- Doxylamine (Unisom)
- Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Gas
- Simethicone
Headaches/Aches/Pains
- Tylenol
Constipation
- Magnesium citrate
- Psyllium (Metamucil)
- Methylcellulose (Citrucel)
- Docusate sodium (Colace)
- Magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia)
- MiraLAX
